The walking and cycling rate in Vietnam is below 1%
On the occasion of the 8th Global Road Safety Week in 2025, the National Traffic Safety Committee of Vietnam has released a series of documents and public messages promoting traffic safety nationwide. The campaign also encourages the public to increase their use of bicycles and walking.

Walking and cycling rates in Vietnam are below 1%
The materials emphasize the management of high-risk behaviors, including: a strict ban on drug and alcohol use while driving; compliance with speed limits with a recommendation to drive more slowly; wearing helmets on motorcycles and scooters; wearing seat belts in cars; using child safety devices in vehicles; and refraining from using mobile phones while driving, starting from January 1, 2026.

According to recommendations from the World Health Organization, the National Traffic Safety Committee considers cycling and walking as green and sustainable modes of transportation. Therefore, enhancing traffic safety for pedestrians and cyclists is seen as a way to improve the quality of life for citizens.
However, in Vietnam, walking and cycling trips currently account for a very small share, less than 1%, compared to 10–20% in many developed countries. In the coming time, the National Traffic Safety Committee will closely coordinate with ministries, sectors, and localities to promote walking and cycling activities.
