The first city in Vietnam to have sidewalks dedicated to bicycles
Hue has painted part of its sidewalks green for bicycles, contributing to the development of a bicycle-friendly tourism city.

In recent days, residents walking along Vo Nguyen Giap and To Huu streets (Hue City) have been surprised to see part of the sidewalks painted green, marked specifically for bicycles.
This is one of several components of the “Secondary Green Cities Development Project – Thua Thien Hue Subproject” currently underway.
The green-painted bicycle lane project costs approximately VND 3 billion (about USD 120,000) and is part of Package No. 26: Greenery, sidewalks, drainage, and public lighting in the An Van Duong New Urban Area.
According to observations, along roads near the administrative center of Thua Thien Hue province, many workers have been painting and marking dedicated bike lanes in recent days. The lanes are painted green with yellow borders, located within the sidewalk, and are about 1 meter wide.
Green sidewalks for bicycles
Mr. Le Thanh Bac, Deputy Director of the Project Management Unit for the Secondary Green Cities Development Project – Thua Thien Hue Subproject, said that contractors are painting sidewalk bike lanes along To Huu Street (1.9 km), Vo Nguyen Giap Street (2.1 km), and several other streets in the administrative zone, with a total length of about 8 km.
According to Mr. Bac, painting a portion of the sidewalk green is a design element aligned with the green city development criteria set from the beginning of the project.
This bicycle lane initiative aims to enhance safety for cyclists, promote infrastructure for bicycle use, and support the broader goal of building a bike-friendly tourism city—especially a green city.
The Deputy Director also noted that the painted sidewalks not only provide a visual highlight but also benefit those who frequently cycle for exercise. These streets are popular with early morning and late afternoon walkers and cyclists. The sidewalk painting is expected to be completed by July 20.
